Ultrafiltration (UF) is a unique pressure-driven physical separation process in which the water is passed through permeablemembranes with pore sizes in the range of 0.1 to 0.001 micron. The pore size of UF membranes is much larger than the pore size of RO membranes. Typically, UF membranes will remove high molecular-weight substances, colloidal materials, silt, turbidity etc. The result is high quality pure water free from physical and biological contaminations. UF systems are most efficient and eliminate the use of conventional treatments, chemical agents for coagulation, flocculation and in some cases carbon and sand filters. UF also removes colloidal silica and other colloids which cause fouling, scaling and poor performance of the plant equipments.

 

The benefit of UF technology lies in maximum product recovery, high solid compatibility, consistently low SDI in filtrate, enhanced life of RO membrane, higher RO membrane flux, smaller plant footprint, lower chemical consumption and lesser energy costs. Our intensive research has made us understand that the application of membrane technology has majorly been restricted to removal of dissolved solids whereas not much attention has been given to removal of suspended, colloidal & particulate matters which is a real challenge. Membrane technology for these applications would improve the efficiency of downstream processes like NF/RO & also increase the life of NF/RO membranes by providing consistently high quality water. Sometimes, if the feed water TDS is less, then the need of high energy consuming process like RO can also be eliminated by using UF and thus the operating cost in terms of chemical & energy consumption can be reduced drastically. Besides this, it will also avoid water wastage as unlike RO, there is no continuous reject generated out of UF.
